Hi!! I am Sophia and I make cakes that are usually not for eating, which is a confusing sentence to say at parties. I am Austrian. I started this whole thing at 21 with one cake and one phone camera and an unshakeable belief that dessert is a legitimate artistic medium.
Since then I have made cakes for Chanel, Fendi, Miu Miu, Louis Vuitton, BVLGARI, H&M and Netflix, and for New York Fashion Week, and for a number of people who asked me very politely not to say who they are. Forbes put me on an Under 30 list and I talked on a stage about sugar and did not fall over.
„Ich sehe in jedem Look von Margiela eine Torte.“— me, to WELT, entirely seriously
the thing i actually care about
Food is the only art form that disappears. You spend three days on something, it exists for one evening, someone puts a knife through it, and then it is gone and it lives only in people's mouths and phones. I find that genuinely beautiful. Most artists are terrified of their work being destroyed. Mine is designed to be destroyed. That is the whole point.
so why is there a shop
Because sometimes people want to keep a piece of it, and you cannot keep a cake. So I make the small hard objects instead: a lighter dressed as a cake, a t-shirt with my handwriting on it, a clear iPod, the headphones from the school computer lab. Things that will not go stale.
frequently asked questions (by real people, at real parties)
Q: is it real cake?
Sometimes. Usually. It depends which one you are pointing at and I enjoy not telling you.
Q: can i eat it?
Not the lighter. Please. I am begging.
Q: how long does one take?
Between four hours and four days. The six-tier red one took longer than that and I do not
wish to discuss it.
Q: do you get sick of cake?
No. I get sick of fondant. There is a difference and it is enormous.
